Gerald McGrath is a singer, guitarist, and songwriter from Kingston, Ontario. After releasing his debut album, "This is Fine" in 2023, he's back with his second effort, "Tiny Tragedy."
Gerald describes it as,"an album about all of the little inconveniences of life that seem bigger than they really are. And the fact that it's ok to be unhappy about things that aren't really a big deal." Like the last album, many of the songs have particular people and events in mind, but it also branches out into more introspective and personal songwriting. "A lot of the songs on this album are actually about me, and dealing with things that can really spiral out of control if left alone and uncared for." Inspired by artists as wide ranging as Gord Downie, Tycho, The National, Queens of the Stone Age, and Matthew Good, Gerald has created an album with great hooks, hummable melodies, and well-crafted lyrics.
On 'Tiny Tragedy' Gerald meticulously crafted his songs piece by piece, playing all of the instruments himself with the exception of the drums. Long time friend and excellent drummer Shayne Bampton (Betablokka) worked with Gerald to arrange and record the drum parts for the album. Guest vocalists on "Tiny Tragedy" include band member Jen Calder (The Kildeers), Gerald's daughter Sophie McGrath, and Ottawa-area folk group Wild Remedy (Colleen Mahoney, Shay Mahoney, and Amy Russett). In addition to Shayne and Jen, Gerald is joined at live shows by bassist Lee Casement (Telefoto, Lee Casement and the Magnificent Lives of Adults) and Dan McCully (Kickstand).
"Tiny Tragedy" releases on Friday, June 27 everywhere you stream music.
